Title: A Song of Wraiths and Ruin
Author: Roseanna E. Brown
Release Date: 02 June 2020
Rating: 4/5 stars
A Song of Wraiths and Ruin is a story about an anxious young man who can see wraiths and a misunderstood young woman who has been overwhelmed by her past.
I really liked the magic in this book, consisting of the use of Nkra, and how it was introduced. (I’ll be honest, the explanation of what Nkra is really reminded me of the Force from Star Wars). The worldbuilding was wonderful to read and I loved each part detailing the history of this world.
I was able to really sympathize with Malik and his anxiety. His panic attacks were really well-written, leading me to believe that the author has a good understanding about what anxiety is. Karina irritated me incredibly at the start of the book, but nearing the end and understanding everything she has gone through, I actually started to like her. The romance in this book wasn’t really there for me and it felt a bit insta-lovey.
As for the villain, I half and half guessed who it would be, but I wasn’t entirely sure until the actual reveal and even then I hadn’t truly realized how intense they were.
The story wasn’t what I was expecting, but my heart broke for Malik as he tried to rescue his sister. I didn’t expect the book to end the way it did, but I’m quote satisfied with the ending.
An amazing debut with a gorgeous world, a beautiful cover and an intriguing story. Definitely worth a read for any fantasy lover!
